Frederick Gras was admitted to Jupiter Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center on November 1, 2017. Just prior, he had splurged and picked up an extra-topping, extra-special take-out pizza from his favorite venue, but never got the chance to eat his delicious pizza; he experienced a fall in the parking lot. Fred’s injury caused him severe knee pain, requiring an immobilizer, limiting his independence and causing him a lack of mobility without support.

“I thought that I was being moved rapidly from the VA and I didn’t know what to expect from here. I did not have all my wits about me when I first came here. I met you [Justin], the nurses and Joy, the unit manager. I was brought to my room and all the nurses were making me comfortable. In the morning, they got me up for therapy. I did not think I was ready for therapy, but they said I was; as always they knew best.

My goals were to get back to where I was before the hospitalization; to get back to a year ago. The year before my son died, I was healthy and able to push him around in a wheelchair. He passed in November the year before, and a year later my wife died. I was taking care of her for ten years. Since her passing, I was losing weight. I gained weight since I have been here because the food is great!”

While at Jupiter Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Fred attended physical and occupational therapy to help him get stronger. This was in line with his goal to walk independently once again. Fred spent his time in the facility talking to each and every resident, getting to know them on a personal level. His presence in the gym always lit up the room; he was known to keep the mood light and conversation flowing.

Fred worked hard everyday and after only a few weeks in therapy, he was strong enough to walk again. After a few walks outside around the grounds of the community, Fred proved that he was ready to return home. Prior to his discharge, Fred conveyed his first intentions would be to buy that pizza that he has been craving for weeks.

“I fell going out to get a pizza for myself. I went to the VA because I was a mess, bleeding with torn skin. Bea came to the VA and told me about this community, I agreed because I meet Bea Scafidi, the community liaison, and she was pleasant. It turned out to be a nice place!”
