Mr. William Flora was admitted to Jupiter Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center on January 22, 2018. He was hospitalized for Congestive heart failure, Atrial fibrillation, respiratory failure, severe osteoarthritis of the hands and ankles, and suffered from a stroke. The new diagnosis was hard for Mr. Flora to accept because he was always accustomed to doing everything on his own.

William was born and raised in New Hampshire, before moving down to sunny Florida several years ago. He joined the air force for 4 years and worked on B47 bombers as a flight line mechanic. William spent his time fixing air planes during the Vietnam War. Following his service in the air force, he worked as a system analyst professional. Eventually, Mr. Flora changed careers and started a roofing business, then ultimately moving to construction and home building.

“I woke up in bed not knowing what happened to me. I had almost no sodium in my body and went into a stroke. I had to learn how to walk again, which seemed natural and to get hold of my brain and figure who I was again. I committed to eating right and working out daily to get back my strength.”

Initially, William required extensive assistance for bed mobility and transfers secondary to strength deficit of lower extremities and decreased range of motion of the upper extremities. After three weeks of intense cardiovascular rehabilitation, Mr. Flora is now able to transfer to the bed and to the toilet independently with safety using a rolling walker.

Today, Mr. Flora is preparing to return home. He gets himself dressed in the morning, walking with a rolling walker with distant supervision within the facility and is independent with home exercise programs. He looks forward to getting back home to enjoy his grandkids company.
